Maitland is the state’s fastest-growing region outside Sydney, according to the results of the latest census.
The city’s population growth rate is 15.5 per cent – with around 7,000 people moving to the area since 2011.
The census also found the Hunter is getting older, with the average age of Newcastle residents now 37, while it’s 40 in the valley.
