POLICE WARN OF TAX SCAM IN FORSTER-TUNCURRY

Police are warning us to be aware of phone calls from fraudulent debt recovery agencies.

Scammers have reportedly been calling people saying they owe money, and if it isn’t paid by the next day, they may be arrested by police.

People have also been asked to purchase ‘i-Tunes’ gift cards as payment.

Police say on the mid north coast, Forster-Tuncurry has been hit the hardest, with one elderly person buying seven-thousand dollars worth of gift cards.

“If someone rings you for something like this, always ask them to send you paper work, they should have your address, you should never have to provide anything over the phone. If you’re unsure, ring the police,” said Chief Inspector Christine George.

A similar scam occurred last year during tax time.
