DUO UNDER POLICE GUARD IN HOSPITAL AFTER HIGHFIELDS CAR CRASH

Police anticipate charging two men, after a serious car crash near Newcastle early this morning.

Around 1:30am, police say two men entered a home on Ocean View Parade in Charlestown, where they took the keys to a Hyundai station wagon, and then fled in the vehicle.

A short time later, a Hyundai station wagon left the road and struck a tree at the intersection of City Road and Fernleigh Loop in Highfields.

The 26-year-old male, who is believed to have been the driver, was treated at the scene for serious head injuries.

He was then taken to John Hunter Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

A 17-year-old male was found a short distance from the vehicle with multiple injuries.

He was also treated at the scene before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

The two men remain under police guard at Hospital.
