ERNIE MERRICK NAMED NEW JETS COACH

The Newcastle Jets have appointed two-time A-League coach of the year, Ernie Merrick, for the next two seasons.

The Edinburgh-born manager has won two premierships and two championships with the Melbourne Victory in 2007 and 2009, before working with the Honk Kong national team for a year.

He’s also been at the helm of Wellington Phoenix for three years, leading the side to the A-League finals series in 2015.

Merrick says he’s looking forward to coaching the Jets.

“Newcastle Jets is a great club and is based in a region which has an outstanding football history,” he said.

“I believe that the club has all the necessary ingredients for on-field success with a strong core of good quality players, a very competent staff, excellent facilities, and most importantly a wealth of extremely passionate fans.”
