A tragedy is unfolding tonight near Tumbulgum on the far north coast, after a car with a young family inside went off a bridge and into the swollen Tweed River.
A nine-year-old girl managed to escape the wreck, climbing to safety and raising the alarm.
Locals then sprang into action, bravely trying to save the three people in the submerged car.
