SHARK WATCH ON LOOKOUT FOR NEW MEMBERS
Volunteer organisation Shark Watch is on a recruitment drive, hoping to boost its numbers ahead of the school holidays.
With more members, it aims to have volunteers patrolling popular Byron Bay beaches for sharks, every day surfers are in the water.
“You get to learn some very good skills, you can become a drone operator if you want to, you can learn how to scientifically observe animals.”
The program uses trained spotters and drones to scan the ocean, alerting surfers and swimmers to any nearby sharks.
“It’s fairy volunteer intensive, so we do need quite a number of volunteers, but people only have to give two hours of their time.”
