GOLF PROGRAM BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS

A special clinic was held in Port Macquarie today, enabling those living with a disability to try their hand at golf.

Run by Empower Golf Australia, the program makes make the sport more accessible, through the use of mobility equipment.

Some participants, teeing off for the first time since becoming disabled.

“Even today, we saw Gill – she’s been in that wheelchair for 10 years and hasn’t stood up in that period – so it’s not just the golf, it’s the social inclusion,” Empower Golf Founder James Gribble said.

Today’s visit could pave the way for a permanent program at Port Macquarie Golf Club.

“We saw it as an opportunity where there’s a lot of people in our area who might have disabilities or an ability that they thought wouldn’t allow them to play, and thought this is a great way to get out on course and still make good friends and be part of the club community,” Port Macquarie Golf Club CEO Daniel Constable said.
