NEWCASTLE’S CRUISE TERMINAL ARRIVES

The Port of Newcastle says the Baird Government’s $12.7 million commitment for a permanent multi-purpose terminal will secure Newcastle’s future as a cruise ship destination.

The funding was announced by the state government this morning with the 3,000 square metre facility to be built at the Channel Berth within the Port’s Carrington Precinct.

Port of Newcastle CEO, Geoff Crowe, says the investment will enable the city to attract more cruise ships.

“Cruise shipping currently delivers around $11 million per annum to the local economy,” he said.

“Home porting has the potential to deliver additional economic value to the region”.

Cruise ship operator, Carnival Australia, has also welcomed the announcement, along with Member for Newcastle, Tim Crakanthorp.

“Ongoing pressure from the community and the NSW opposition has resulted in a big win for the Newcastle economy”, he said.

The construction will also include a car park and additional wharf infrastructure.

Design work has begun and construction is due to start in mid 2017 to be finished the year after.
