HISTORY MADE FOR BLACK DIAMOND AFL WOMEN

AFL Canberra has claimed the inaugural Women’s ‘Coast vs Country’ Challenge Shield in yesterday’s first ever match for the newly-formed Central Coast-Newcastle rep side at Bateau Bay.

The region’s development side was quick off the mark, claiming a 31 to 24 point win over the visitor’s youth side.

The tables turned however in the senior game, the Black Diamond women falling to Canberra, 78-31.

“I don’t think the final result was a true indication of the game. We matched them most of the game through the mid-field. We just struggled to get forward to convert and they just took the opportunity a little bit more skilful and with a bit more experience they were able to them goals at vital times,” said Black Diamond AFL Operations Manager Garry Burkinshaw.

Despite the matches being split one a piece, Canberra claimed the silverware after kicking more goals in total.
