NSW PREMIER ANNOUNCES END TO GREYHOUND RACING

New South Wales Premier Mike Baird has announced the end of greyhound racing in the state.

It follows a Special Commission of Inquiry which found evidence of animal cruelty – including mass killings and live baiting.

“In response to widespread illegal and unconscionable activity, including the slaughtering of tens of thousands of dogs, I can today announce that NSW is putting an end to greyhound racing,” said Premier Baird in a statement on Facebook.

The inquiry found that between 48,000 and 68,000 greyhounds wereย killed in the last 12 years because they were deemed uncompetitive.

The industry will be shut down from July 1, 2017.

  1. So we also should shut down the rspca and pounds for doing the same thing they knock off more animals in one month than the industry ever did lets go one better and do the same to the meat and fresh produce industry for killing more animals what a bloody joke you listen to the whinge left wing morons that are destroying this country how about grow up that’s what the breed of animal is designed for same as cows chickens and other animals if you are banned one you might as well ban the rest

  2. i hope then they ban horse racing, Harness Racing and whatever runs on four legs, but i am sure they wont as the money coming off those industries to the state coffers covers there pay plus everything else there eligible for.

  3. Hey mate, broad use of left wing term, I agree that other industries use barbaric techniques and I consider myself a lefty. I also know trainers who love their dogs so can’t put everyone in the same basket ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Pounds put down unwanted pets, abused pets that cant be rehomed due to mental issues, sick and injured animals. Do you think the Rangers of the Pounds ENJOY putting animals down cause the A*HOLE owners don’t want them because there not puppies and cute anymore. The average employment span of a Ranger is 4-5 years. After that they have to leave because it affects them too greatly that they start to develop emotional issues.

PS. The RSPCA has a NO EUTHINASIA policy.

  5. I am elated that Minister Baird finally recognized what many of us
have known for years and that is the exploitation of living creatures
for profit leads only to heartless cruelty, needless suffering and death
for those animals trapped in this barbaric gulag.

I am a Board member of Grey2KUSA Worldwide, an organization that fights to
save these marvelous creatures all over the globe (you can lean more about us
here: http://www.grey2kusa.org/index.php) I have fostered and adopted
rescued racing greyhounds since 1995. I cannot imagine abandoning any of
them when they become injured, old or sick and yet this is routinely what
happens to them at operating tracks. Imagine the danger they face when the track
closes. They need a guardian angel more than ever at times like this and I hope

Minister Baird realizes that his continued protection of these soon to be homeless dogs is

even more important than his decision to liberate them.
