LAKES MAINTAIN TOP SPOT IN TAKE DOWN OF SOUTHS

In Newcastle rugby league, Macquarie has caused a big upset, thrashing Wests, while Lakes overcame Souths in a high scoring contest.

The Seagulls started well, Kyle Kennedy and Jacob Gagai combining to put Lakes in front.

The defending champions extended their lead when Chris Adams started the move and Matt Craig finished it.

The Seagulls looked like making it a cricket score when Casey Burgess strolled over.

But Souths hit back as Lewis Schneider set up Jarrod Flanagan.

Lakes responded through Chris Randall to make the score 22 points to six.

The two sides continued to trade blows, Liam Higgins burrowed over for the Lions.

Before Kennedy bagged a double, as the Seagulls claimed the win to maintain top spot.
