BYRON BAY TRAIN MAKING TRACKS

It’s been 12 years since a train rattled and rolled through the Northern Rivers, however in a matter of months – the railway will be brought back to life.

A Byron Bay resort is privately funding to restore a 3.5-kilometre section of track- a move that’s left the community divided.

  1. The only people who don’t support this railmotor are the handful greenies that continue to forget about all the cars polluting Byron Bay and the fact that the train service will emit less then a fraction of this, and the noise from the horn they will be using is quieter than the horn of their own cars.

Byron Bay will continue to reap the benefits of this railmotor for years to come and it has been a project widely welcomed by the vast majority of the community. I personally welcome anything that would relive and provide an alternative to the traffic that doesn’t involve building more roads! – Even if it does run 20m outside my house…

  2. A great move, good on them.
Hopefully things like this will become more common in the future.

  3. Fantastic news for some form of railway for the area. The talk about noise what about all those large trucks on the road. I hope this is the return of railway service to this northern area of NSW. Queensland closed the Gold Coast railway in approx 1960’s then to be rebuilt recently. NSW must not follow the same way and have to fully rebuild the line.

  4. Hope it all goes well and PLI issues don’t put a stop to it like the famous Barossa Wine Train here in SA.

  5. This will be great for Byron and the Northern Rivers region
I cannot wait to be able to have the leisure of taking a cruisy train ride into the heart of Byron Bay instead of being forced to wait in traffic on Ewingdale Rd! It could be such a tourist attraction when it is converted to light rail

Sure it may be a little bit noisy but the trucks and buses are much louder. It

  6. So I am missing something? A starting point and a finishing point are you on a road to no where or is there a resort at the end of the line that a select few can afford just a question O and who gets right of way at the crossing … in its hey day bells 6 a day .. my understanding this will be a return train every 1/2 hour thatl work …

  7. Wow, so a private company can afford to put 3.5 km’s of train line around there and run a train, but our governments can’t afford to do up the line again?

What on earth is wrong with them? Get onto it, get work for the dole people to help, pay people, get experts on it, just get it done.

We need the trains running all the way again, just fix the lines so the XPT and freight trains can once again run. I’ve walked along a heap of the sections and sure some of the bridges need fixing and some of the rail lines and tunnels need work, but these things can be done. I bet with the right funds and leaders it could nearly all be done in 5 years.

Our roads are so congested and we need the trains back asap! This is insane that a private company is doing their 3.5 km’s but we can’t get the rest fixed?

    Come on!

  8. I used to catch the train up to my parents place in Mullum from Sydney and I used to go through Byron rails and you could see people inside drinking etc. Then I would get off the train at Mullum, that was only 12 or 13 years ago. Isn’t it time we got the trains going again? Stop making excuses and do it!

  9. Elements wants to put the train in place only to benefit their guests and promote their resort. There is no benefit to the community in the area. Its something like $6 a ticket for the public. There is very little parking near the station. It’s just a cashed up train fanatic getting what they want with complete disregard for the community or the environment.

  10. left the community divided? i don’t think so, only the few that live near it. And its not a new railway, its always been there, so your going to have to live with it, again.

  11. Confucious Said ” a long journey starts with a single step ” ! This is a small step now that hopefully will lead to a bigger step in future, let us hope so !
