NEWCASTLE MAN INJURED AFTER SPEARFISHING MISHAP IN SHOAL BAY

A 24-year-old man has told of the terrifying moment he was shot while spear fishing at Shaol Bay.

Kris Bithel was with a friend yesterday afternoon when it’s believed one of the spearguns misfired, shooting a 1.4 metre rod into his stomach.

While his friend went for help, Mr Bithel swam to shore.

He was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital where he underwent surgery to remove the rod.

The Newcastle resident says he considers himself incredibly lucky, but won’t be deterred from jumping back into the water.

“Soon as I can stand up and kick my legs I’ll be jumping in the water.”

“I’ve just bought all new dive gear as well. So I can’t get that go to waste,” he said.
