There was a community rally gathered outside Hamilton’s Wesley Uniting Church last night to call on the federal government to stop the deportation of more than 250 asylum seekers to detention on Nauru.
The vigil included talks from guest speakers including Helen Miller from ‘Grandmothers against Detention of Refugee Children’.
Attendees were also invited to light a candle for the asylum seekers, inside the church.
Similar rallies were held across the country.
It follows a High Court decision last week that the government did have the constitutional authority to fund offshore detention centres.
