PORT STEPHENS TO FIGHT MERGER
Port Stephens Council has come out strong against the Baird Government’s proposal to merge it with Newcastle, voting unanimously to fight the proposal.
Councillors last night voted to allocate $200,000 in the 2015-16 budget to engage a consultant to assist with the preparation of council’s submission, as well as conduct a public information campaign.
Meantime, Mayor of Port Stephens, Bruce MacKenzie, has issued a call to arms to the people of Port Stephens to demonstrate their opposition to the proposal.
“If we don’t fight this, it will be to the detriment of the people of Port Stephens in the decades to come,” he said.
Deputy Mayor, Chris Doohan, also showed his opposition, bringing boxing gloves to the meeting.
