FAIRFAX ANNOUNCES JOB CUTS AT HUNTER NEWSPAPERS
Almost 70 jobs will be cut from Fairfax newspapers across the Hunter, as the company presses ahead with its restructure.
The announcement that 69 full-time positions will be axed, including 37 at the Newcastle Herald, was made to staff this morning.
The Maitland Mercury will be reduced from five days a week to three, while the Singleton Argus will become a weekly newspaper.
Around two thirds of the positions cut will be editorial staff.
In a statement, Fairfax says the changes aim to “deliver a stronger, sustainable and modern rural and regional network of newspapers and websites.”
