SIGNIFICANT NEWCASTLE AREAS TO RECEIVE DUAL NAMES

The Geographical Names Board is asking for public comment on a proposal of dual names for eight significant areas in Newcastle.

Chair of Geographical Names Board, Des Mooney, said many local councils were increasingly open to dual naming.

“It is important that place names reflect the character and history of the local area and community,” Mr Mooney said.

The names presented are:

  • Whibayganba as a dual name for Nobbys Head
  • Tahlbihn as a dual name for Flagstaff Hill
  • Burrabihngarn as a dual name for Pirate Point, approximately 1km west of Nobbys Head
  • Yohaaba as a dual name for Port Hunter, the port in Newcastle.
  • Coquun as a dual name for the Hunter River (South Channel), a channel forming part of the outlet to the sea.
  • Khanterin as a dual name for Shepherds Hill
  • Toohrnbing as a dual name for Ironbark Creek
  • Burraghihnbihng as a dual name for Hexham Swamp

Details of the proposals can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board’s website at www.gnb.nsw.gov.au.

Submissions close on August 31.
