A surfer punched a shark as it attacked him on the NSW north coast this morning. The 52-year-old was surfing with a friend at Evans Head around 6am when the shark struck, causing wounds to his legs and hands. He’s undergoing surgery at Lismore hospital. Beaches in the area have been closed for 24 hours.

Hunter Valley Energy Coal has been fined over a blast at its Mount Arthur coal mine last year that sent a toxic cloud over Muswellbrook. The company will pay $90,000 over the incident last February that sent harmful fumes over the Muswellbrook Industrial estate.

And torrential rain has triggered landslides in Nepal, killing at least 30 people. The wave of mud and rocks struck a number of villages near the nation’s most popular trekking circuit, west of Kathmandu. Rescuers are still searching through rubble, with a dozen people still missing.
