The maritime union has stepped up its campaign to stop two tugboats, believed to be contaminated with asbestos, from leaving Newcastle.
Crews refused to work on the imported boats back in February when the issue arose – despite both vessels having been previously cleared of the hazardous material.
Owner Svitzer plans to ship the tugs to Singapore for repairs this week, but the union wants them fixed here, fearing they’ll pose problems wherever they go.
