FANNING EQUALS MR’s BELLS RECORD

Mick Fanning has paid homage to Newcastle surfing legend Mark Richards, after equalling MR’s four wins at Bells.

Fanning today edged out Adrian de Souza in the closest final in pro tour history. Both recorded combined scores of 15.27 in the decider, but Fanning won because he had a superior single wave score.

The triumph equals the record number of Bells wins held by Richards and Kelly Slater.

“Straight-up legends of the sport,” said the 33-year-old Fanning.

“MR is the greatest in my eyes and obviously Kelly, what hasn’t he done?

“He’s probably the greatest athlete I’ve ever seen.”

He also reserved special mention for the late Andy Irons.

“A couple of years ago I was trying to notch up 20 wins, so I’m stoked.

“Maybe I’ll get some new goals.

“… Just those three names, I’d never, ever put myself into that category.

“Those guys are my heroes.

“MR, he’s a god. Kelly – king. Andy – forever.

“It’s awesome.”

Fanning sits top of the world rankings, as the tour heads to Margaret River.
