Traffic was banked up several kilometers along the New England Highway, north of Newcastle, after a cattle truck rolled late this afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the scene, between the Hexham and Tarro bridges, at around 5.30.
The driver was trapped for a short time, before being rescued.
An unknown number of cows have been injured and killed in the accident.
