LABOR WINS NEWCASTLE COUNCIL BYELECTION

Labor’s Declan Clausen has become Newcastle’s youngest-ever city councillor.

The 22-year-old has taken an unbeatable lead in the ward three by-election, with more than 42 per cent of the formal vote.

Independent Kath Elliott came in a close second, with 38 per cent.

While the poll won’t be officially declared until Wednesday, the young politician says he’s already feeling the pressure.

“There’s still a little bit of time for preparation. There’s a council meeting on Tuesday, I don’t know yet what is on the agenda, so obviously that’s going to dictate the way that things roll out for the first council meeting that I’m involved in.”
