CHRIS NICHOLSON’S BOAT ARRIVES IN MALAYSIA FOR ASSESSMENT
The race is on for Lake Macquarie sailor Chris Nicholson and his crew to re-enter the Volvo Ocean Race, with their damaged yacht arriving in Malaysia overnight.
The boat ran aground off Mauritius in late November, but Nicholson and the salvage team were able to keep most of the vessel intact.
“This paints a pretty honest picture of the situation right now. It doesn’t get any better when you walk away from it. It is what it is.”
With the initial assessment complete, the yacht will now be transported to Italy for repairs.
The crew is hoping to re-join the race at the start of Leg Eight in Lisbon in June.
“It just doesn’t end. Reality is we’ll push until the end of the race. We’re in total recovery mode for the next six months.”
