WALLSEND UNIT BADLY DAMAGED BY FIRE

A Wallsend woman and her seven-year-old son had a lucky escape early this morning, after their unit went up in flames.

At around 1:30, fire crews were called to the Harriet Street premises, arriving to find it well alight.

Fortunately both occupants had escaped the flames, after being woken by a fire alarm.

“Just smelt smoke and opened my sons bedroom door and there the fire was, so I just grabbed him out of my bed and ran out the door.”

“I’ve been telling him for weeks he needs to go back into his own bed and stop coming into mums. I don’t know if I’m going to let him out of my bed now.”

It’s believed the blaze started in the unit’s second bedroom.

The cause is still unknown.
