Work is soon to commence at Muttonbird Island in Coffs Harbour, to replace the the walkway at the top of the reserve which is used by more than 150,000 people per year.
A new raised walkway will also be built to allow the shearwater birds native to the island to nest underneath.
The island will be closed to the public from 9am and 4pm on weekdays starting from tomorrow.
