NORTHERN RIVERS RESIDENTS REJOICE AS CSG LICENCE SUSPENDED

Greens mining spokesperson, Jeremy Buckingham, has welcomed the suspension of Metgasco’s north coast coal seam gas (CSG) drilling licence, after the government said the company had not undertaken effective community consultation.

“This is a fantastic win for the people of the Northern Rivers that have united in great spirit and determination to protect their land, water and community,” said Mr Buckingham.

The Bentley mine project has attracted fierce opposition from locals and the suspension comes just days before thousands were expected to blockade the site.

Lismore mayor, Jenny Dowell, said the people of Lismore are thrilled at the decision.

“This is fantastic news… I can’t tell you how excited and thrilled the people up here are”.

Resources and Energy Minister, Anthony Roberts said the company had not undertaken genuine and effective consultation, as required by the licence.

Metgasco is currently seeking clarification about its licence from the government.

Mr Buckingham says it’s a win for people across the Northern Rivers.

“People across NSW consider coal seam gas as unsafe and unnecessary. From Western Sydney, to the Northern Rivers, to Narrabri, to Gloucester, the community is saying no and that they are prepared to put their bodies on the line to stop this industry.

The government has also referred Metgasco to the Independent Commission Against Corruption after receiving information about shareholdings and interests.
