AMWU SAYS LAY OFF IS ANOTHER BLACK MARK FOR GOVERNMENT

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union says the layoff of close to 200 jobs at a Cardiff rail firm Downer EDI, is another black mark for the state government.

NSW Organiser Cory Wright, says the government was made aware of the difficulties faced by the firm last year, yet failed to offer any clarity on future rail contracts for local industry.

“There is a looming jobs crisis across regional NSW and Western Sydney yet the Government continues to sit on its hands in regards to allowing the local manufacturing industry a level playing field to compete,” Mr Wright said.

Downer EDI will lose 190 workers after its contract to build a 78 eight-car Waratah train fleet concludes.
