A 21-year-old protestor from Victoria has suspended himself from a tripod, to block access to a coal loader at the Whitehaven Coal, Maules Creek mine project.

A Leard Forest Alliance spokesperson says about 20 protestors are at the scene along with police and security guards.

It follows a string of protests opposing the clearing of part of the state forest for a new $767-million mine near Boggabri.

Whitehaven Coal has described ongoing protests against the Maules Creek mine as “a nuisance”, but says it will not be deterred from continuing the project.
