FEDERAL COURT RULES BURKE WAS RIGHT TO APPROVE MINE

The Federal Court has ruled former environment minister Tony Burke was right to approve Whitehaven Coal’s Maules Creek coal mine proposal earlier this year.

Anti-mining activists the Northern Inland Council for the Environment had questioned Mr Burke’s decision, claiming the project shouldn’t have been given the green light.

They argued the plans didn’t comply with the federal Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

However, Justice Cowdroy today dismissed the legal challenge.

Whitehaven says it’s now getting on with the job of building the Maules Creek mine.
