The best paddlers in the country have descended on the SUP hotspot for Surfing Australia’s national titles.
Defending champion, Tugun’s Shakira Westdrop, won this morning’s Open Womens’ Qualifying Round.
“I’d like to take it out again but the other girls are surfing really good too and the conditions are pretty hard and tricky so yeah I can just try my best. They got the world titles in Peru the last couple of years and I managed to get second – it was pretty close so hopefully if I can win this week I can hopefully go over there and take that title too.”
“The upper level of the guys has just risen so far and they’re just doing these amazing things and you think you’re not going to make that they’re gonna fall off and then they go right out of it, it’s fantastic.”
The event wraps up Sunday, with a marathon paddle from Broadbeach to Currumbin.
