World surfing champion Joel Parkinson casts a large shadow, but younger cousin Mitch is doing his best to step out of it.
He left for Brazil today to represent Australia at the World Junior Surfing Championships.
But the 18-year-old isn’t expecting an easy ride.
Wonder kids Gabriel Medina and Felipe Toledo are rumoured to be competing.
“I’m pretty sure it’s true because I’m taking over a bunch of boards for Gabriel. What do you do, they’re in the comp, just got to try and beat them.”
Both are ranked inside the world top 20, and have wowed crowds with their ability in the air.
Next year Parkinson wants to crack the top 100 in the world.
