WALLARAH HOUSE DESTROYED IN FIRE

More than 170 firefighters continue to battle a huge bushfire to the south of Lake Macquarie.

The fire is still burning out of control with more than 1,500 hectares of bush burnt out so far.

People living in the Nords Wharf and Murrays Beach areas were sent emergency alerts when the fire threatened the suburbs earlier today.

NBN News understands four historic properties have been destroyed at Catherine Hill Bay, including Wallarah House. The home built in 1887 was on the market for the first time in its long history. (click on video)

  1. Thank you so much for the local coverage with friends in these areas and no way to get in to help them it’s wonderful to be able to see what’s happened&check if they’re ok

  2. I know you guys are pushed for time, but we need a bit of local knowledge on this story.

Here are the CORRECT spellings of three streets you mention:

    Montefiore Street, Catho
Rutleys Road, Doyalo (only one “t”)
    Awabakal Drive, Nords Wharf.

The last one is getting towards being offensive. The Awabakal tribe are the traditional owners of the land around Catho, and have a number of things named after them, not least of which is the town of Awaba. But a local with local knowledge would not make the LATTER spelling error, as the word would be second nature to them.
