AIRPORT MONEY TO BOOST TOURISTS BY MILLIONS

The NSW Government today announced $11.1 million in funding for the expansion of Newcastle Airport.

The money comes from the Hunter Infrastructure Investment Fund, specifically for development in the Hunter region.

Among projects announced were funding for a new football facility at Lake Macquarie , funding for several Upper Hunter projects and as well as hospital, fitness and arts projects from Muswellbrook to Lake Macquarie.

Newcastle Airport CEO, Paul Hughes, says the funding is fantastic news for the Hunter and Port Stephens.

“Receiving this funding is a real game changer; the expansion will provide the space for us to grow our domestic services and give us the capability to move into the short-haul international market,”.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade & Investment Andrew Stoner said the expansion will increase the airport’s capacity and provide a strong boost to the region’s economy.

“Today’s announcement will allow the expansion of the existing terminal footprint by 2,600 square metres and help alleviate current capacity issues during peak operating periods,” he said.

Under the plans, the annual passenger capacity could expand from 2-million to 5-million.

Development Approval was recently granted for the project and work is expected to commence in the next financial year.
