Work will commence tomorrow on a parkland rehabilitation project at Stockton.

In approximately six-weeks the Pitt Street Reserve will have improved cycle and walkways and eventually be fenced off to vehicles using the area as a thoroughfare.

Newcastle Council, Parks and Recreation Manager, Roger Ward says protecting the area is a priority.

“The area is a peninsula and suffers from exposure and poor soil quality, this coupled with vehicles constantly compacting the ground has caused significant degradation.

“We need to address the erosion problem as well as resolve illegal vehicle use in the reserve and to do this more than 350 pine bollards and fences will be installed. This should help to restore and protect the fragile coastal dune areas as well as stop cars using this area as a thoroughfare,” he said.
