HELLO POSSUMS, NEST BOXES POPULAR

The Hunter Expressway is on track for completion by the end of the year, but as construction forges ahead, animal welfare officers have been checking the impacts on native wildlife.

The $1.5-billion project cuts a 40-kilometre swathe through hills and forests between Newcastle and Branxton.

400 specially-designed nest boxes have been installed in an attempt to offset habitat loss.

According to the Roads and Maritime Authority, the results have been encouraging, with families of possums and squirrel gliders taking up residence.
