AMMONIA LEAK AT ORICA

orica3Another ammonia leak has occurred at chemical giant Orica’s Kooragang Island plant in Newcastle.

Emergency crews were called at around 7 o’clock this morning after vapour escaped from a pipe flange containing around 100 kilograms of the liquid chemical.

NSW Fire and Rescue, NSW Police and HAZMAT crews attended the incident which has since been contained.

NSW Fire and Rescue Inspector Greg Symonds says crews suppressed the ammonia with a stream of water.

“We have a zero reading for any ammonia gas from 30 metres away,” he said. “There have been no evacuations and there is no offsite impact.”

It’s the latest in a series of leaks at the site, with a hexavalent chromium leak shutting the site down in 2011.
