CANDIDATE Q & A – Jayson Packett, Palmer United Candidate for Paterson

packettWhat motivated you to run for the seat of Paterson?

I am so frustrated with the state of politics in this country. So many people are disengaged, they couldn’t care less about politics. This is because our leaders in government and opposition have had a race to the bottom in their petty, point scoring and negative personal attacks. Meanwhile, good people are losing jobs and hope in our leaders. We have the highest dissatisfaction rating of both federal leaders in a generation, something has got to change.

What do you think are the major issues in the electorate?

Leadership, or the lack thereof is a great place to start . This country needs confidence, business needs a reason to start investing again, and not in the future, right now. People need to know they are heard by their politicians and that they are busy getting on with the job instead of spending their time criticising the other guys policies. The economy, jobs,
coal seam gas and asylum seekers are the hot topics and I am proud of the suit of policies we have announced to address each of these.

If elected what will be your first priority?

Aboriginal Infant mortality rate. Why? Because they are Australians and our constitution protects their rights. They have the same rights as anyone else. Doesn’t matter if it is hard or cost more. I can’t believe this issue is not on the radar at this election.

Have you run for federal government before?

No this is my first time.

Can you tell us a little about your background and what skills you think you can bring to the job?

I have complete an economics degree. For the last 20 yearsI have run my own businesses, my wife and I currently have a very successful photography
and video production business, where we are trusted by many of the largest companies and brands in Australia to do their work.

How do you rate your chances of winning this election?

Competition is a great thing in business, it makes you pull your socks up, work harder, smarter and faster. I am here to shake things up in Paterson. Bob Baldwin will I am sure be confident about the result come September 7 but I have got skin in the game, 4 generation of my family live or have lived in my electorate, I care about this region and I will fight
hard now and past the election for this region. How will I go, it’s going to be interesting, I think I have made a few people nervous and rightly so I say.

What do you think is your biggest challenge in this election?

Getting our message out. When I was first approached to run for the Palmer United Party my reaction was I don’t know Clive and I don’t know the policies. When I got past the dinosaurs and Titanic II and actually read the policies I was inspired. They are fresh new and clever ideas to get this country on the front foot. Here is but a few of our policies.

VIEWER QUESTION from Les Merrett ” We run a charity for people with autism, what are you going to do to help us establish a respite and training facility and what are you going to do to help people with autism and their families?

Aside from the election I am currently working in my business on a project for First Chance, a local early intervention and holistic education
facility. These guys do a great job supporting children and families. Through interviewing staff and parents over many days and hearing their stories it has impacted me. I also have several close friends with autistic children and even one of the children my wife and I foster care has special needs and requires early intervention. So I am very aware of the
difficulties and stress this creates in families. I would be more than happy to promote and support any charity that provides support to children and families who wrestle daily with autism. Count me in.
