CANDIDATE Q & A – Craig Thomson, Independent candidate for Dobell

Craig Thomson h&s shot What motivated you to stand for the seat of Dobell again?

I first stood for Dobell because I was sick and tired of the electorate missing out on vital infrastructure. Missing water infrastructure, dilapidated surf clubs, money needed to improve Tuggerah Lakes and no public cancer centres were just the tip of the iceberg. I feel the job is still not finished with a children’s ward and full maternity ward needed at Wyong hospital, stopping a coal mine that threatens our community health and our water supply and the need for a high school being just a few things still needed.

Obviously it has been quite a difficult time for you as the Federal Member for Dobell , do you think the events of the past few years will hurt your chances at this election?

I think a Member of Parliament should be judged on their record and what they hope to do in an upcoming term. I am happy to be judged on that criteria and I believe that most fair-minded people on the Central Coast adopt that attitude.

Are you finding campaigning as an independent different to when you campaigned as a Labor candidate in prior elections?

Yes in some ways it is different. This election I am only concerned with what is in the best interests of this community without having to worry about “party” issues.

What do you think are the biggest issues in the seat of Dobell?

I feel this is an election where pensioners have been forgotten and I am keen to address their issues. As well we need a children’s ward and full maternity ward at Wyong hospital, we need to stop a coal mine that threatens our community health and our water supply and we need a new high school and all of our surf clubs renewed, just to name a few things.

What would be your first priority if elected?

To stop the Wallarah 2 coal mine through a private members bill.

What’s your biggest challenge in winning this election?

Not having the resources of the major parties.

Why should people vote for you?

Because I have a proven track record of getting things done.

Who will you be preferencing?

A voter preferences, not me. My how to vote recommends a number of minor parties and Independents before the Labor and Liberal party but I do believe it is entirely up to the voter as to how they vote.

VIEWER QUESTION from Rachael Glasson: What will you do to help first home buyers? Currently there is only assistance if you buy a brand new home. However, not many first home buyers can afford a ‘new home’.

I believe that we can make home buying more affordable by having a national plan for the release of new housing land rather than leaving it to local councils to decide on a council by council basis. I have already raised this issue in Parliament.
