An old laneway on Newcastle’s iconic Darby Street has had a facelift thanks to the efforts of organisation Newcastle NOW.

New lighting, wall art and seating has been installed in the laneway between Goldbergs and The Depot cafes with the installation to be officially launched on Friday.

The project was undertaken with the help of Darby Street Traders, Newcastle NOW and the Office of Student Architects.

Chairperson of the Darby Street Advisory Group, Kevin Coffey, said the project is the first of many place-making initiatives. “we hope that the community becomes proud of these installations and owns them. We are about to create little wins that make the place more of a village.”

  1. Personally I think it looks terrible, this art you call art looks like graffiti and I believe condones graffiti over other buildings by aspiring young “artists” with a spray can in their hand.. Preserving doesn’t mean you have to graffiti it up… By all means the lighting and seating is great but surely there is another way to dress it up, I think the brick work should be embraced, not covered up..
