LAKE MACQUARIE RESIDENTS CONSIDER CLASS ACTION OVER SEA LEVEL RISE

A group of Lake Macquarie residents is considering a class action against council, as concerns grow about its sea level rise policy.

The Marks Point locals claim the measures have caused property prices to plummet, and while council disputes that, it says, it is keen to talk.

  1. Sharon Pope (Real Estate skeptic) must be as confused as the public about this issue. In 2009 Pope stated in her paper presented at the State Conference that property prices would be affected.
Real Estate agents work tirelessly to work with the market on property pricing. Making use of a median or average pricing assessment will never show clearly the affects of market forces because property prices range from $250k to $2m in Marks Point.
The 149 certificate that is attached to property title contracts does not state the sea level rise benchmark but advice therein is for the market to make their own enquiries with Council, a directive to this Policy with its benchmark.
Unfortunately, further investigation leads to more confusion since CSIRO (LMCC attributes as their main scientific source) publicises 2030 and 2070 regional ranges. The property market runs away confused and leaves the Vendors with a bottlenecked market. No wonder, the benchmark is obviously gleaned from the top end of the CSIRO range as if Lake Macquarie is an atoll like the Marshall Islands, not the northern region of the south east Australian Coast.
Council offers no options for adaption either.
Marks Point sales have taken three times as long as the average sale to sell, price drops of up to 30% and all the while the amount of properties on the market in the suburb has not changed from 4%. I know, I work in Real Estate.

  2. I would like to join the action group, please send me some information.
