The O’Farrell Government’s decision to sell Eraring Power Station for $50-million has been described as a fire sale.
Gary Kennedy from Trades Hall Council believes energy prices could skyrocket as a result.
“When these assets are privatised, private enterprise is only driven by profit motive, therefore prices go up as they drive costs down, which are wages and conditions, cost to the consumer certainly go up and in some cases it’s extreme.”
While staff at the Lake Macquarie plant have been guaranteed their positions, Mr Kennedy argues that could change in the coming years.
