MAN IN COURT OVER NEWCASTLE SHOOTING

A 32-year-old man will face court on numerous charges including intent to murder, after a shooting in Newcastle overnight.

A 39-year-old man was shot in the back while standing near his car on Turton Road at Waratah, by a gunman in a passing red four-wheel drive.

The injured man drove several kilometres to a hotel in Charlestown where he collapsed. He was then taken to John Hunter Hospital.

A few minutes later, police were called to the nearby suburb of Mayfield after a motorist was threatened with a firearm on Waratah Street.

Police arrested a 32-year-old man after he crashed into a parked car during a short pursuit.

Investigating officers have executed a search warrant of a house in Cobby Street Shortland.
