LARKINS’ SENTENCE REDUCED

Steven Larkins, the former CEO of the Hunter Aboriginal Childrens Services, has had his sentence reduced in Newcastle District Court today.

He was sentenced last year to a minimum of 19 months but during a severity appeal today, Judge Bermar today cut the sentence to a 15 month non-parole period, over child pornography and forging employment documents.

Larkins’s Barrister Mr Booth was asking for a suspended sentence, arguing that he’s been ostracised by the community and is not a well man… adding “gaol is an intense environment to endure for 19 months”.

In handing down his decision, the Judge said “a significant number of the (pornographic) videos showed children performing sexual activities, each of those children was harmed… For that reason, a custodial sentence is required.”

The Judge also argued that by possessing such material he further encouraged harm to children.
