THOUSANDS ISOLATED BY FLOODWATER IN NORTHERN NSW

Around 2,000 people are isolated by floodwater across Northern new South Wales as ex-tropical cyclone Oswald moves south from Queensland to New South Wales.

540 millimetres of rain has been recorded in 24 hours at a weather station near Mullumbimby, while winds of 120 kilometres per hour have been recorded at Byron Bay.

The Pacific Highway is under several metres of water at Halfway Creek south of Grafton.

About 850 people have been cut off at Ewingar west of Lismore and and 400 at Darkwood on the mid north coast.

SES Commissioner Murray Kear says the number of people affected will increase throughout the day as rivers rise.

At Kyogle, a number of caravans from the Kyogle Caravan Park have been moved to higher ground.
At Bellingen, Lavenders Bridge has been closed due to rising floodwater, cutting the township in half while the Pacific Highway has been closed in both directions just south of Grafton.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the wild weather is expected to reach east of Moree on Monday afternoon, and west of Armidale on Monday night.

Further south Newcastle and the Central Coast are expected to see the worst of the conditions late tonight, with strong winds and up to 200 millimetres of rain expected to fall.
