STATE GOVERNMENT BACKS DOWN ON HIGHWAY FUNDING

In a reversal of its position on Pacific Highway funding, the state government says it will now match federal government funding.

According to Treasurer, Mike Baird, work on the highway upgrade will now be progressed after the government secured support for its plans to lease Port Botany and Port Kembla.

The multi-billion lease deal will fund the backlog of highway work, which were scheduled to be finished by 2016.

The state government had previously said it would only fund 20 per cent of the cost.
