NEWCASTLE PROFESSOR NAMED SCIENTIST OF THE YEAR

It’s been a successful night for Newcastle scientists at the New South Wales Science and Engineering awards, with a local professor taking out the scientist of the year award.

Laureate Professor John Aitken was crowned New South Wales Scientist of the year, recognised for his work in reproductive biology.

Professor Aitken discovered a major cause of male infertility which has resulted in new methods of therapeutic intervention, as well as developing a contraceptive that not only prevents pregnancy but stops the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

“This award recognises the importance of reproductive biology research at the University. It is up to scientists, like myself and my team, to make the breakthroughs needed to revolutionise the
technologies used to regulate reproductive efficacy in both man and animals.” Professor Aitken said.

University of Newcastle Laureate Professor Paul Foster was also recognised, winning the Excellence in Biological Sciences award for his work in asthma and respiratory disease.

The University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Mike Calford said Newcastle’s success highlights the University’s outstanding reputation in biomedical research.

“This is the first time in the award’s five-year history that a researcher from a regional institution has been named NSW Scientist of the Year. We are very proud of both Professor Aitken and Professor
Foster’s achievements in their respective fields,” Professor Calford said.
