19th CENTURY ARTEFACTS FOUND AT LAMAN STREET WORK SITE

Artefacts and bones found during the reconstruction of Laman Street have been identified as oyster shells, broken crockery and the shin bone of a cow from the late 19th Century.

Yesterday afternoon the discovery of the artefacts stopped work at the site while an archaeologist inspected the area.

The archaeologist said the objects were not in their original layers, indicating that they had been transported to the site.

“The assessments indicated that the area was not known as a site of cultural significance.” said Acting Director of Liveable City John Johnston. “The artefacts were discovered one and two metres under the surface indicating that they had previously been used as fill when the site was backfilled many years ago.”

Council workers are digging a trench on the street for the installation of power conduits.

Work will continue around the site that the artefacts were found until the final reports are received.
