WEATHER UPDATE: GOOD NEWS FOR SKIERS AND SNOWBOARDERS

We are in for a succession of cold fronts that are going to deliver the best snow of the ski season so far and there is plenty more to come in behind it. Until they get here things are going to be a bit milder during the day but the nights will still be very cold.

On the satellite it is clear across the nation but the south west and south east is getting bombarded by a succession of fronts. The polar rotation is still in high gear with storms still ripping around the south pole across the roaring forties.

This blue line is the 540 line, this lets us know where the cold air is. Ahead of it, there is some warmer air getting funnelled in, but towards the end of the week the polar blast will sweep across the south east producing snow. We have three fronts to come through with a big one on Sunday. From this we should be able to accumulate 40 – 50cm of snow, and we might even see some bigger numbers than that. The trend of cold polar air just pulsing in across the broadcast area is set to continue for the second half of June.

It is fantastic for skiers and snowboarders, the season is starting to move into high gear with the early part of July shaping up nicely. New Zealand will probably be very nice into the middle part of July.

It’s not good for farmers, they don’t like the frosts and there is going to be many of those very cold nights especially during the early parts of next week, even colder than what we are getting at the moment.

For surfers it is looking pretty good with more swell and winter westerlies continuing to roll across the sand and over the waves, making for clean conditions.
