FIRST MENINGOCOCCAL CASE CONFIRMED IN HUNTER FOR 2012

A young boy is in a stable condition with confirmed meningococcal disease – the first for the year in the Hunter New England Health Region.

The boy is being treated in a Hunter hospital, and those in contact with him have been given antibiotics.

Last year the region saw 15 cases of the disease, slightly up from the 14 confirmed cases in 2010.

Doctors are reminding the community to be on alert for symptoms which include;

– Leg Pain
– Cold hands and feet
– Abnormal skin colour
– High Fever
– Headache
– Neck stiffness
– Dislike of bright lights
– Nausea and vomiting
– Rash of reddish-purple spots or bruises
– Drowsiness
