GAVIN’S BLOG: FLYING THROUGH THE CLOUDS

Here’s some beautiful footage I took while flying at sunset off Merewether Beach with some lovely cloud formations in every direction. The cool thing about flying on the coast during Autumn is how the changing temperatures can create exaggerated lift.As the air temperature over the land cools at the end of the day, the air temperature over the ocean becomes warmer due to the warm sea surface temperatures left over from the Summer. As wind gusts move in across the ocean they hit the cliff faces and are forced upwards. When you get a warm pool, the lifting mechanism is increased because the air temp behind the cliff is cooler allowing the bubble to rise higher. This can allow you to reach great heights without being in danger of flying in strong winds. It happened to me last year. This year I was lucky enough to have my helmet cam on and two local eagles flew in to enjoy the conditions. It was a beautiful flight, I hope you enjoy.
